Wild Boar Hunting in Texas

Wild Boar Hunting in Texas

Our wild boar hunting property in Texas is covered in large oak, elm, cypress, food plots, and feeders. You will hunt from box stands set up over feeders, food plots, and some long shooting lanes (senderos) that produce hog after hog. Several water sources throughout the ranch keep our hog population at peak heights. We have two large lakes, one around 65 acres and the other 35 acres. Both are stocked with record-size trophy bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish—so be sure to bring along your fishing tackle. Our largest trophy wild hogs weigh in at 400 pounds or slightly more and make for beautiful trophy shoulder mounts.

With most of our boar hunt packages, you will check in around noon on any given day and be in the stand for an afternoon or evening hunt. Mornings will start well before first light and run until about 10 a.m., when we will pick you up and retrieve any downed game. We will bring you back to the lodge for breakfast while we process any harvested game. You will return to the stand in the afternoon and hunt boar until dark. If your group would like to hunt a little after dark, you can discuss this with your guide upon arrival. This cycle repeats for the duration of your wild boar hunt, with a noon departure on the last day.

The Blackbird Ranch outfitter also provides hog hunting at night on specific dates throughout the year. You can sit over open pastures with feeders to go after the largest of hogs. All feeders have automatic lights attached for your convenience and success. This is for sure a trophy boar hunt, and you can bring your own lights and thermal scope, or we can provide night-vision and other equipment as needed for a successful hog hunt.

Hog Hunting Gear List

Hog Hunting Gear List

  • We recommend bringing a good pair of binoculars so you can field-judge hogs for sex and size. The rule of thumb is a pair with higher power than your rifle scope, at a minimum of 10 power.
  • A range finder is helpful, especially to predetermine distances before any boars come in and out while in the pastures.
  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight.
  • Emergency poncho packs are best for rain gear.
  • We recommend snake boots or snake chaps, especially if you are planning on a spot-and-stalk hunt.

  • A decent soap to wash with and deodorant are necessary to keep your scent down.
  • A pair of shooting sticks or a monopod is handy in almost any boar hunting situation. It will enable you to adjust your rifle whether on the ground or in a stand, both metal ladder and box style.
  • Camouflage is especially important for a free-range hog hunt. Though hogs cannot see very well, they do notice movement, so something that blends into the surroundings will help considerably.
  • Bring fishing equipment for midday fun if you choose.
  • If you plan to stay out a little after dark, please bring a light for your gun, and we do allow thermal equipment. Feeders will have lights attached to aid in your harvest.
  • Recommended minimum hog hunting calibers are your standard deer hunting rifle—.308, .270, .30-06, .350 Legend, and .243 all work very efficiently. As for AR-15 calibers, we find that the best success comes from .450 Bushmaster, .410, .458, and 6.5 Grendel. We will allow only the 5.56 in Barnes Vor-Tx. We do not allow full metal jacket ammunition or any .223. When hunting wild hogs, the bigger the bullet, the better the chance of success, especially if you run into a boar over 250 pounds.
